Summary

Thinking of a foray to a quaint English village? You'll think twice after reading this tongue-in-cheek illustrated guide to the countless murderous possibilities lurking behind these villages' bucolic façades--from bestselling author Maureen Johnson and illustrator Jay Cooper。

In the England of murder mysteries and TV detectives, no destination is deadlier than a quaint country village, and you never know you're in a murder village until it's too late。 No attraction or local character is safe--whether in the pub for a pint, or on the manicured grounds of the local estate for a shooting party, bodies can turn up anywhere! Danger lurks around every cobblestone corner。 If you are foolish enough to make the trip, at least be prepared。

Brought to life with dozens of Gorey-esque drawings by illustrator Jay Cooper and peppered with allusions to classic crime series and unmistakably British murder lore, Your Guide to Not Getting Murdered in a Quaint English Village gives you the tools you need to avoid the same fate, should you find yourself in a suspiciously cozy English village (or simply dream of going)。 Good luck, and whatever you do, avoid the vicar。

3,5 stars - well that was short and quite entertaining。 I smiled a lot but not once did I laugh out loud, which is the reason the book did not really convince me。 I think the illustrations were nice and the idea is great。 But for that little content the book is quite expensive。 But I did not regret reading it and it was quite funny at some moments。

A very hilarious book。 This book contains all the ways a person can die in an English village。 If you read lots of murder mysteries, you'll be familiar with a large chunk of this book。 What I liked about the book: The tone of the book was quite funny。The illustrations were great。 What I didn't like about the book:I did't get anything out of this book。 This was just a fun time but, I felt like most of the book was empty。 Thank you to Netgalley for providing me with an eARC of this book in exchang A very hilarious book。 This book contains all the ways a person can die in an English village。 If you read lots of murder mysteries, you'll be familiar with a large chunk of this book。 What I liked about the book: The tone of the book was quite funny。The illustrations were great。 What I didn't like about the book:I did't get anything out of this book。 This was just a fun time but, I felt like most of the book was empty。 Thank you to Netgalley for providing me with an eARC of this book in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

Laughed out loud at several points! Great for fans of Golden Age detective fiction。 All the tropes are deftly pointed out and sometimes subverted。 The illustrations are a great accompaniment。

A nice treat, in the tradition of Edward Gorey。 Definitely for fans of murder mysteries, English murder village or otherwise。 Smart and funny text plus great illustrations that it pays to look at the little details。 Oh, wait, is that someone at the door? Hold on a minute。 [footsteps walking to door, door opens] Oh, it's you。 [review ends suddenly] A nice treat, in the tradition of Edward Gorey。 Definitely for fans of murder mysteries, English murder village or otherwise。 Smart and funny text plus great illustrations that it pays to look at the little details。 Oh, wait, is that someone at the door? The authors absolutely nail it… er um, a dead-on satire… no, they slay the subject… Lord, there must be a way to put this…They get every cliche of the cozy murder mystery。 Amazing how many cliches there are。 But it’s still a one-joke book。3。5 stars rounded down。

I can easily see Hercule Poirot endorsing this guidebook so he can take a much needed vacation! This novella/guidebook was laugh out loud funny! If you enjoy murder mysteries, vicars, the word vat, and jokes made at the expense of British classism, this book is for you。

The writing is brilliantly witty and the illustrations clever and engaging。 Murder book lovers will recognize and chuckle over every single detail。 We get it。 If murder is your thing, it would be a shame to miss this book。 Johnson's quirky quizzes, character and village names are too funny for words and Cooper's maps, buildings, village residents, murderers and victims are perfection, especially the shadowy hands。 They both must have had such fun creating such hilarity! Be sure to absorb every single detail。 Then re-read and absorb again。 When in said villages just don't draw attention to yourself, avoid the vicar and every building and you may escape unscathed。 My sincere thank you to Clarkson Potter/Ten Speed Press and NetGalley for the privilege of enjoying this fabulously fun book! It will be a great addition to my murder-infested family library。 。。。more

Your Guide to Not Getting Murdered in a Quaint English Village is one of the most clever and funny little gems of advice for anyone who loves a good English murder mystery。 Chock full of practical advice about staying in a village or a manor home (surprise—it’s best not to do either), the dangers of “furniture and features” in said manor homes, the family members to avoid therein (look out for Cousin Lucy and Reginald), and why never to take a tour of a bell tower when offered, readers would do Your Guide to Not Getting Murdered in a Quaint English Village is one of the most clever and funny little gems of advice for anyone who loves a good English murder mystery。 Chock full of practical advice about staying in a village or a manor home (surprise—it’s best not to do either), the dangers of “furniture and features” in said manor homes, the family members to avoid therein (look out for Cousin Lucy and Reginald), and why never to take a tour of a bell tower when offered, readers would do well to follow such sage observations。 With wry wit and humor accompanied by delightful illustrations, this little handbook feels like an homage to Edward Gorey。 。。。more

Maureen’s trademark wit and writing style make this an engaging read。 Coupled with the illustrations, by Jay Cooper, this was such a fun book that I actually read it several times。

A playful and charming book! Love this guide and its beautiful illustrations of different ways and locations to be murdered while visiting an English village and manor。 There are also quizzes, which I failed, sooo I guess I won't make it back should I visit。 🪦😳I'll have to see a hard copy of this book at a bookstore。 This would make a lovely gift for any cozy or British mystery lovers。Thank you Clarkson Potter/Ten Speed Press, and Netgalley for my ARC。 A playful and charming book! I enjoyed it! Lots of illustrations and not a ton of text。 It was goofy and fun。 As a fan of both book and tv/movie murder mysteries I thought it was clever。

Highly enjoyable and funny。 I loved this short book about how to not get murdered in an English village。 Anyone who has read a lot of mystery books will recognize the scenarios that are in this book。 I loved the description of the family members in the manor house。 A great treat for mystery fans。

A fun cheeky gift book。 It does not make the fact that Maureen Johnson is never giving us a 4th Shades of London book any easier, but it makes the pain more bearable。

This is a collection of drawings done in shades of black, gray, & whites, with small splatches of red (signifying blood。) The drawings are accompanied by text about the 'quaint English village' or the 'manor & occupants/surroundings' found there。。。。。& the dangers found in these places。 I guess it's all 'tongue in cheek' humor。。。but I found it all mostly lost on me。 Maybe the target audience is adults who enjoy the PBS-type English murder mysteries, which I do enjoy。。。。。but my humor just didn't c This is a collection of drawings done in shades of black, gray, & whites, with small splatches of red (signifying blood。) The drawings are accompanied by text about the 'quaint English village' or the 'manor & occupants/surroundings' found there。。。。。& the dangers found in these places。 I guess it's all 'tongue in cheek' humor。。。but I found it all mostly lost on me。 Maybe the target audience is adults who enjoy the PBS-type English murder mysteries, which I do enjoy。。。。。but my humor just didn't carry me thru this book! I’ve really come to like Maureen Johnson’s books over the past couple of years, and I like her fresh takes on the tried-and-true formulas of the murder mystery genre, so I’ve been really looking forward to this new release about how to avoid getting murdered if you ever find yourself in the most quintessential Agatha Christie setting of them all: the quant English village。。I expected this to be a just a simple little coffee table type book that I’d read through quite quickly and then sort of for I’ve really come to like Maureen Johnson’s books over the past couple of years, and I like her fresh takes on the tried-and-true formulas of the murder mystery genre, so I’ve been really looking forward to this new release about how to avoid getting murdered if you ever find yourself in the most quintessential Agatha Christie setting of them all: the quant English village。。I expected this to be a just a simple little coffee table type book that I’d read through quite quickly and then sort of forget about, but I really really really liked the sense of humour on every page of this little book。 There’s also something about the really creepy and cartoonishly morbid illustrations that adds to the humour in the writing here too。 Also, I’m not sure if I was reading into it too much, but there also seemed to be a vague sense of background plot going on in the illustrations and descriptions that I’d be interested to know if anyone else picked up on。 Perhaps my only complaint about this one is that for such a funny and page-turning book, it felt finished far too quickly。 I’d absolutely have loved some extra sections on other quintessentially Christie locations, like how to avoid getting murdered on an English railway train, or sinister seaside hotel, or glamorous cocktail party。。This was a really nice quick read at only a 120 or so pages, and I read through the whole thing in about an hour and enjoyed every minute of it。 If you’re looking for a nice quick read to have with your Sunday coffee, or as a Christmas stocking filler in a few months, this is one I really can’t recommend highly enough! 。。。more
